Our new sandals came in yesterday!!!
I am so very excited
because I get to use them this summer on our hiking excursions. The Exuma chain
is filled with the ruins of Loyalists dreams that crumbled like the brick and mortar
of their plantation homes. I cannot wait to explore through the history
and walk around where the ghosts of the past still roam freely between the
worlds. A wonderful work of Historical
Fiction is “Winds From the Carolinas”. I have read the novel three times and plan on reading it again on
our sail over to the Bahamas, this June. I think I first grew curious about the
Loyalist after reading the book four years ago. I find it fascinating that
landowners, loyal to the crown, left the country that they had lived in for so
long and packed everything, sometimes even the bricks from their homes, and set
sail for the Bahamas. Of course, they were promised wealth by the British
government through crops that would never grow, in a soil that could not
support plantation life. They would not figure this out for many years though.
Fast forward to 2015, and crumbling history is just waiting to be discovered by
new Loyalists, the ones who are loyal to the wanderlust that drives our souls
out into adventure!
Our
first stop on the hiking tour will be Warderwick Wells. There are so many trails
on this small island which will take us four or five days to explore. A land
grant was given to a the Davis family around 1785. Their plantation was
probably built sometime soon after. The ruins are located on the far side of
the island from where we will be on a mooring ball so we will probably have
quite a hike. It is a beautiful area. I cannot wait to post pictures.
Ray and
I are out this weekend at Pelican Bay. It is so quiet and peaceful here which
is a great place to sit and plan out our itinerary. The days are getting
shorter to have everything prepared but, oh how exciting it is to chart and
shop, clean and repair, plan and dream. We have a little over two months until
we throw off the lines and set sail for clear water. I guess not everyone would
be as excited as I was over a new pair of sandals, but to me, they represent
adventure! I’m all over that!!! Until
next time……..
